Why Mikel Arteta wants Raya: Gibbs, a former Arsenal defender

Former Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs explains why manager Mikel Arteta wants to bring in Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to challenge Aaron Ramsdale, who is now the team’s starting goalkeeper.

With three arrivals reported thus far during the summer transfer season, Arsenal is actively improving their team on all fronts.

Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz were acquired by the Gunners for over £210 million each from Ajax, West Ham United, and Chelsea, respectively.

Raya is eager to join Arteta’s team as their fourth summer addition.

In an interview with ESPN FC, Gibbs stated that he is not surprised by Arteta’s desire to sign Raya before the upcoming season, claiming that the Arsenal manager wants a goalkeeper with good footwork.

“I am not surprised that Arsenal is interested in David Raya,” he stated. Next season, they’ll be in a battle on all fronts. Simply said, you need two competent goalkeepers.

“I believe he offers Aaron something a little different. It is quite beneficial to have a goalie that is excellent with his feet when you play European football. Aaron may be it, but I believe that is one of David’s specialties. Mikel would likely be quite happy to have those two goalkeepers, in my opinion.
