Before the 2027 election, stakeholders in Nigeria want the government to separate INEC

In order to make INEC more efficient for the general elections in 2027, stakeholders in the electoral process have petitioned the Federal Government of Nigeria to unbundle it.

Under the aegis of Youth Electoral Reform Priorities, this was recorded in a communiqué released at the conclusion of the National Multi-Stakeholders Forum on Electoral Reform Priorities.

They further demanded that the National Assembly finish reviewing the Constitution and amending the Electoral Act at least two years prior to the upcoming election.

Their argument is that if the government were to do this, everyone would be able to comprehend the recent legislative changes and comply with them.

According to the stakeholders, the procedures that preceded the 2023 general elections were inadequate.

The creation of the National Electoral Offenses Commission, with the authority to punish electoral criminals, should constitute the unbundling of INEC.

“Instead of the President picking the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), we demand that the federal government form a special election committee comprised of impartial, high-character individuals.

As for the appointment of INEC National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners, they were informed that this task will fall on this committee.

Participants included members of many groups, such as the Nigerian Youths Parliament, the Inter-Party Advisory Council, the Conference of United Political Parties, the Youth Electoral Reform Project, the National Association of Nigerian Students, and representatives from other political parties.

Aside from that, there was the Nigerian Medical Association, Christian Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Labour Congress, and Nigerian Union of Journalists.
