An Iranian court has convicted rapper Toomaj Salehi to death for his support of anti-hijab rallies.

Mahsa Amini, who was detained in 2022 for wearing a “improper” hijab, died days after her detention. The rapper has been incarcerated for nearly a year and a half for his support of the wave of rallies that followed her death.

“Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court… sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth,” his counsel Amir Raisian announced on Wednesday.

After openly endorsing the anti-hijab rallies in October 2022, Salehi was detained.

Salehi was indicted by the Revolutionary Court for “assistance in sedition, assembly and collusion, propaganda against the system and calling for riots.”

A judgment was delivered to the lower court by the Iranian Supreme Court to “remove the flaws in the sentence” after the court examined the case.

To the contrary, the court had “in an unprecedented move, emphasised its independence and did not implement the Supreme Court’s ruling,” as Raisian said.

The rapper “will certainly appeal against the sentence,” according to Raisian.
