We’re too old, De Bruyne confesses after Belgium wins the trophy

The playmaker for Belgium, Kevin De Bruyne, has acknowledged that his team’s squad is too seasoned to be the favorite to win the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

When comparing the average age of the team, Belgium is the sixth-oldest team in Qatar.

Two of their key defenders are Jan Vertonghen (35), and Toby Alderweireld (33).

In their 30s are De Bruyne (31), Eden Hazard (31) and Dries Mertens (35).

Michy Batshuayi’s goal gave Belgium a 1-0 victory over Canada in their opening World Cup match, but they put on a lifeless and uninspired performance.

De Bruyne, who currently plays club football for Premier League champions Manchester City, responded, “No chance, we are too old,” when asked if Belgium could win this year’s World Cup.

We had a chance in 2018, I believe. Our crew is strong, but it is getting older. Some significant players left.

“We are bringing in some good new players, but they are not performing at the same level as other players did in 2018.” I think of us as more outsiders.
