Liverpool vs. Tottenham: A pregame showdown for nothing

‘Super Sunday’ is the name given to the event. However, today’s match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will not include anything noteworthy.

With only three games remaining, the two teams have nothing to play for.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad was once in a three-way contest for the Premier League crown, including Manchester City and Arsenal.

That died down following a lackluster 2-2 draw with West Ham and a 2-0 loss to Everton in the Merseyside Derby.

After Saturday’s victories by Arsenal over Bournemouth and City against Wolves, all lingering optimism vanished. With such resounding victories, it was evident that the two leading teams had no intention of letting any points slip in order for Liverpool to pull off an upset and win the championship.

Once again, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs have had a disappointing season.

Infographics comparing the Australian coach’s team to Arsenal’s Invincibles were already up and running.

There was a moment when the North London club led by five points. Those who know how their cookies always turn out only had to be patient.

As expected, they have dropped off in a dramatic fashion. There was a two-week break in the middle of the season, and a loss at Anfield on Sunday would make it four losses in a row.

It is hard to believe that there was a period when Tottenham were touted as the squad with title-deciding potential. Along with Aston Villa, they were vying for the final Champions League slot.

It appears like they will reach the Europa League at some point.

At this point in the season, the matchup between Spurs and Liverpool might have been pivotal. The campaign is winding down, though, so it would be nothing more than a pointless game.

The hosts are still heavy favorites to win.
