Refund of $760,000 paid for Yahaya Bello children’s fees requested by American International School through EFCC

For the purpose of returning tuition for students enrolled by Yahaya Bello, the children of the former governor of Kogi State, AISA has requested “authentic banking details” from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Allegedly, Bello used funds from the Kogi State Government to pay for five of his children’s fees in advance, totaling $720,000.

At this particular school, the students range in grade from two to eight.

On April 17, EFCC agents besieged Bello’s Abuja apartment in an effort to apprehend him for a supposed N80.2 billion scam.

It has been alleged that Bello was escorted out of the premises by Usman Ododo, the current governor of Kogi, while the operatives were still there.

The institution reported that $845,852 had been paid in tuition “since the 7th of September 2021 to date” in a letter sent to the EFCC’s Lagos zonal commander.

After deducting the cost of previously provided educational services, AISA determined that a reimbursement of $760,910 was due.

The letter states, “As part of your investigation into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family,” and asks that the EFCC reimburse the amounts mentioned before, along with the legitimate banking details.

Eight hundred forty-five thousand eight hundred and fifty-two US dollars and eighty-four cents, or $845,852.84, has been put into our bank account as tuition and other fees since September 7, 2021.

After subtracting the cost of the educational services, the total sum to be returned to the state is $760,910.84. You may put it in your currency as $760,910.84.

“From now until the students graduate from ASIA, there will be no additional tuition fees. All fees have been settled.”

The institution threatened to notify the anti-graft authorities of any more deposits made by the Bello family.

“Ali Bello contacted the school on Friday 13 August 2021 requesting to pay the family school fees in advance until the students graduate from High School,” AISA mentioned in a statement signed by Greg Hughes.

Since then, the ex-governor has been added on a watchlist by the Nigerian Immigration Service, and the EFCC has proclaimed him wanted.
