Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage as Tems, is a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter who has called her life a “testimony.”
The singer claimed she began in Lagos but has since expanded internationally.
Tems made the statements on July 2, 2023, in New Orleans, Louisiana, while delivering a prologue at the Essence Festival.
“My life is a witness, you know. For those who don’t know, I’m from Lagos, Nigeria,” Tems stated to raucous applause.
The singer then gave a performance of “Essence,” the record-breaking song she and Wizkid wrote together and performed at the 29th Essence Festival.
With their electrifying chemistry, the pair serenaded the audience.
Tems became a household name in 2020 after grabbing the show as a guest on Wizkid’s song “Essence,” which appeared on his album “Made In Lagos.”
After a remix version featuring Canadian pop artist Justin Bieber was released in 2021, the song reached its highest peak at position nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.
Since that time, Tems has collaborated with international superstars like Rihanna, Drake, Future, and Beyoncé.
