Monday, NLC to picket DISCOs and NERC offices in protest over electricity pricing rise

On Monday, members of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) will be picketing their offices, as ordered by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Electricity distribution firms (DISCOs) across Nigeria would also be the target of a nationwide picket, according to the NLC.

The order came when the Central Working Committee (CWC) met on April 30, 2024.

“The nationwide picketing is slated for Monday, 13 May, 2024,” stated a statement issued by NLC Acting Secretary-General Chris Uyot.

In a letter of complaint sent to NERC headquarters on 12 May 2024, the organized labour group threatened widespread protests unless the utility company reversed its decision to increase electricity rates.

Unions have called for a reversal, citing the difficult situation that NERC action will force the public into.

They said that the planned fee increase violates the rights of Nigerian people and goes against the established procedure required by law.
