Senator Ibikunle Amosun, a former governor of Ogun State, has declared his support for Biyi Otegbeye, an ADC candidate for governor, in the upcoming election.
Amosun, however, declared that he is firmly supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate, to win the election.
This supports the earlier rumor that Amosun had turned on Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is running for re-election.
After a disagreement with Adekunle Akinlade, who ran against Abiodun in 2019 on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, it was reported that Amosun had focused his attention on Otegbeye (APM).
Amosun, an APC candidate who is now a senator and represents Ogun Central, had favored Akinlade over Abiodun (APC).
According to the results of the polls, Abiodun received 241,670 votes, defeating Akinlade, who received 222,153.
Additionally, Otegbeye and Akinlade ran in the APC governorship primary but lost to Abiodun in the run-up to the 2023 elections.
According to information obtained by newsmen, Akinlade and Amosun had a falling out when the latter left the ruling party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been offered the position of deputy governor.
According to insiders who spoke to Daily Trust, Amosun authorized Otegbeye to run for governor on the APM platform, but Akinlade allegedly prevented the action, leaving the former governor’s team to haggle for the ADC’s ticket.
But Amosun made it clear that he is supporting Otegbeye over Abiodun, who is running for the APC, the party to which they both belong, in the upcoming election.
Amosun talked to BBC Yoruba in an exclusive interview that was seen by reporters in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
“I can promise you that right, left, and center are all backing the same candidate for the presidential election (Tinubu). We are helping one person, in my opinion. That’s a different story when it comes to the governorship election. There, I don’t belong.
“I don’t fight from behind one finger. People caution me not to say that because of this. In terms of the governorship, neither I nor my supporters are on that side.
When asked who he was backing, Amosun replied, “ADC is the party, and Biyi Otegbeye is the person I am backing.”
