The state-owned Rovers Football Club will now receive N10 million each month instead of N5 million, thanks to Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu.

During yesterday’s visit by the club and its technical team, the governor made the 100% increment.

He claimed the increase proves his will to turn football into a business and rebrand the sport in the state.

In addition to addressing other minor issues plaguing the football club, he pledged to offer a new bus to the squad in 2025.

Please accept my sincere appreciation and best wishes for all that you have accomplished over the years despite our financial constraints. Rovers has a long and storied past. It seems like this administration is all set to make sports more of a moneymaker.

Clinton Andy, an 18-year-old goalkeeper for the Rovers who was also representing Nigeria’s under-20 national team, was praised by Otu for representing Cross River and bringing honor to the state.

He hoped that the players would have more opportunities to follow their football goals and urged the Rovers Football Club staff and players to work even harder so the club could regain its former glory as a dominant force in Nigerian football.

All of the injured football players were to receive medical treatment immediately per the governor’s order.

Mrs. Agnes Atsu, Commissioner for Sports Development, explained that Rovers Football Club, which is just five games from the end of the Nigerian National Football League, needed to bring up some issues with the governor during their visit with the players.

The dilapidated team bus, inadequate medical treatment for players, and lack of finance for players’ camping were among the complaints brought up by Rovers captain Inyang Asuquo.

After receiving word of the team’s increased subsidy, the captain expressed his gratitude to the governor.
